HISTORY

Only two previous owners.

In 1938 the Easterdays designed the layout with builders. They had 3 sons which account for the unusual 2 closets in a shared bedroom, granting each child their own space. Special customization and attention to detail is illuminated by the Easterdays "ok to proceed" written with pencil on the plaster walls - later discovered under the original wallpaper. When the children were grown the Easterdays were ready to sell their prize home.

Married in 1968, Detroit's Ruth and Geoff Gowman were looking for their dream home to raise a family. After 2 years of hunting they knew this was the home & cherished every detail. They raised 2 daughters, hosted the holidays, ran neighborhood watch, invested in the community, created many wonderful memories and now almost 50 years later, they are ready to pass on the torch!

Memories & Stories

Neighbors on the right were Mrs. & Mr. Marr. Mr. Marr was VP for R.L. Polk & played percussion for the DSO. Later the Marrs had the gate installed in the fence between houses because of frequent visits.

On the Left was the Laethem family. Five great sons. Mr Laethem was a civil engineer involved with the foundation of Cobo Hall. Wife was a nurse and second mother to the Gowmans.

Want to know more about the current owners "the Gowmans"? Geoff Gowman was a fixture in the neighborhood. He ran for Mayor of Detroit in 1985, founded the "Friends of the Alger" (new outdoor patio is named after him!), was granted the Detroit Spirit Award for community involvement. Lead parades down East Warren, invested in preserving the Elm trees which lined the streets of EEV, the list is endless.

Ruth Gowman was equally involved, working as a top secretary at GM, ran a weekly community roller-skating night, helped elderly neighbors, had ping pong tournaments in the basement and BBQs in the back yard on warm summer nights. Most of all she cherished this home, making sure the woodwork, paint and all exquisite details are preserved during these past 50 years.
